"The cause of all our personal problems and nearly all the problems of the world can be summed up in a single sentence:

Human life is very deep, and our modern dominant lifestyle is not."

-Bo Lozoff

Who We Are

Headquartered in Central North Carolina, Human Kindness Foundation is run by an all-volunteer board of directors, and depends almost entirely on volunteers for its staff as well.

Volunteering at Human Kindness Foundation

volunteerHKF depends upon volunteers to continue its work. Some volunteer several hours each week, others come once a month. A typical work day may involve office work such as data entry, packaging of books & tapes, or working directly with prisoner mail. We currently send out thousands of books and tapes to prisoners each month. If you are interested in volunteering with us, and would like to know more about volunteer opportunities, please contact us.

Meet the HKF Board:

Currently, five members serve on the Human Kindness Foundation BOD.

Pam Clarke learned about the Human Kindness Foundation through her own family’s circumstances. In 1991, her son James was convicted of murder and received a 45-year sentence. James received a copy of We’re All Doing Time in 1999, and Pam watched as his life was transformed by it. In 2004, Pam moved to North Carolina to work more closely with HKF. Pam currently works in the Durham area as an accountant and volunteers weekly at HKF, in addition to her Board duties.

Joshua Lozoff was two years old when his parents Bo and Sita began the Prison Ashram Project. He visited his first prison at the age of five, and has stayed connected to the Foundation's work ever since. Josh edited one of HKF's main titles, Deep & Simple. Josh makes his living as a professional magician (even performing in prisons on occasion) and volunteers weekly at HKF in addition to his Board duties.

Sita Lozoff is Co-Director of Human Kindness Foundation. She and her husband Bo Lozoff began the Prison-Ashram Project in 1973. You can see more about her life and prison work here. Sita continues to work in the HKF office with great joy and gratitude.

Catherine Dumas Miller became a regular volunteer in 1992, and joined the HKF Board in 1993. In 2000, she and her family moved to Kindness House, the residental community run by HKF, where they lived until it closed in 2006. Now, Catherine is Co-Director of Human Kindness Foundation, and our only salaried employee. She has a B.A. from Davidson College. Catherine and her husband Steven are grateful for the years they lived at Kindness House with their son Eli, who was 4 when they moved into the community. Kindness House was a wonderful place for homeschooling, and an opportunity to live in community with a diverse and ever-changing group of people.

Katherine Paredes’connection with Bo and his teachings has been an important part of her spiritual journey since 1993, when she met Bo and Sita at a meeting to brainstorm ideas about the residential project they were proposing, Kindness House. A great admirer of Human Kindness Foundation’s work ever since, Katherine traveled to Kindness House from her home in San Antonio, Texas regularly to volunteer, do personal retreats, and to learn more from Bo. Katherine has worked with people with developmental disabilities for over 30 years. She has one daughter, Teresa, and she lives with her husband, David, in San Antonio.
